Science on Tap – Dive Team, Thursday, August 27 6:30-8:30pm
Come join Georgia Aquarium’s Dive Team on Thursday, August 27 for our first Science on Tap lecture series event! Enjoy hors d’oeuvres and beverages in our stunning Oceans Ballroom while lead divers Jeff Reid and Mauritius Bell take you to the depths of their diving adventures! Learn about outside research Georgia Aquarium’s dive team participates in, such as journeying down to the Bahamas to study Gorgonia, a breed of soft coral, and the damaging effects of its mass harvesting by cosmetics companies. Listen in on discussions concerning the Aquarium’s lionfish acquisition and research on tubastrea coral, an Indo-Pacific coral that has invaded the waters of the Caribbean. Discover how the dive team addresses maintenance issues within the Aquarium, including how they repaired a broken SS2 sidewater motion pipe that threatened the livelihood of Tropical Diver’s coral (a task featured on the Discovery Channel!). Learn all about Jeff’s commercial diving past in Dutch Harbor, Alaska, the setting of hit show Deadliest Catch, as well as Mauritius’s experiences cave diving throughout Florida. Hear all about how the dive team rounds up the whale sharks for physicals, trains volunteers and more by joining us at Science on Tap!
