Brian C. Hosmer, an associate professor of history at the University of Illinois at Chicago, will explore how the Northern Arapaho Indians have been portrayed in drawings, photographs, and other materials during a talk on Sunday, October 5, 2008, at 1 p.m. at the Mitchell Museum of the American Indian, 3001 Central Street, Evanston.
Hosmers talk, titled Niiihi and the Newberry: Northern Arapaho Images Through History, will draw on his work as curator for a recent exhibit at Chicagos Newberry Library that juxtaposed early materials documenting the history and culture of the Northern Arapaho with contemporary photographs.
At the university, Hosmer teaches in the area of American Indian history. His research interests focus on intersections between economic change and cultural identity in American Indian communities. He is also the former director of the Newberry Librarys Darcy McNickle Center for American Indian History.
