Singer songwriter James Hurley from Moorpark, California when asked what type of music do you play?" replies "It's the sum of my influences and experiences and is therefore ever changing"....but in musical reference terms, well, I'd have to say it's my own blend of jazz, blues, rock, pop, and folk influences. Let me see...Sort of like Louis Armstrong is the conductor on a train, and while the Beatles and James Taylor are drinking gin and playing rummy in the observation car, Hendrix watches and pets a cat."

Recently named by Folkworks magazine as "One of the Top Ten Live Acoustic Male Singer-Songwriters in L.A." James Hurley's eloquent guitar, smooth voice, and masterful writing combine to create a seductive blend of jazzy, blues-pop-folk that has been called "Sting meets the Beatles...Clapton makes the introductions". His third solo release “Tempest in a teacup” reinforces his well-deserved reputation as a consistently compelling artist whose music is a reflection of the life he lives.

It began with a song. A Jimmie Rodgers song in particular (not the singing brakeman - the pop singer). The chorus was "Uh oh, I'm falling in love again, uh oh, uh oh...." I was three or four years old and I can remember singing that thing over and over...my folks were probably sorry I'd ever heard it! But that was when I awoke to music and song. Then there was the music my parents had. Louis Armstong, Benny Goodman, Ella Fitzgerald, Joe Pass, Django Reinhart, and scores more...all represented in a sacrosact archive of my Dad's called "The Records". Listening to music was an event. He'd carefully select what he wanted to hear, gently remove it from the jacket (taking care to touch only the edges) and place it on the turntable. Then he'd sit in his chair, lean back, and give the music his undivided attention. Nothing was ever said, but it was understood. This was important......Something to be savored, experienced, and respected...this was music.

Described by one fan as "Americana...on the rocks, with a twist" James' music has the sophistication of jazz, the immediacy of blues, and the imagery of film. With his smooth, passionate voice and tastefully understated guitar playing (called "jazz-like virtuosity" by minor 7th Magazine) he leads the listener through tales of whimsy and romance, celebrations of life lived, and stories of love won and lost. With wry humor and unflinching honesty, he follows his own muse and invites the listener to come along for the ride.

Butterfield’s Roadhouse is an old fashioned down to earth family friendly music venue for local and national artists, a special venue for traveling artists and performers, special events and jams.

Their small forum is somewhat like a combined old fashioned Juke Joint/Listening Room/Coffee and Tea Room with an up close and personal atmosphere making it a memorable occasion for all.

Additionally a segment of the Paul Butterfield Fund and Society's (PBFS) Educational Archival Exhibit is permanently housed and displayed at The Frog and The Hummingbird Co and Butterfield’s Roadhouse
