Saturdays in Hayward With Art: Sumi-e painting and Haiku

In the second of a series of programs exploring the Art Community in the Hayward Area, the local award-winning artist, Kazumi Cranney, will give a presentation on Japanese sumi-e (a kind of wash painting that uses traditional Chinese style black ink and brushes) and haiku poetry.
Cranney’s lecture will be illustrated with slides of her work and she will also demonstrate basic sumi-e techniques. Materials will be available for audience members to try. She will also have on display handmade books of haiga, an art form that combines sumi-e and haiku. The books are made with Japanese rice paper with hand-sewn bindings in the traditional style. A few books will be available for purchase. Green Tea and refreshments will be provided by Japan Grill. Event co-sponsored by Hayward Arts Council and Friends of the Hayward Public Library.
