The 8th Annual Santa Fe Days on the Square is located at Historic Downtown Carrollton, TX off I-35E @ Beltline Road exit #443B. October 8th, 2011 from 9:00 -6:00 pm and October 9th, 10:00 - 4:00 pm. The opening ceremony on Oct 8th at 9:30am will include "Renegade Nation" a Native American Veterans Honor Guard.
This free, family-friendly Native American Indian cultural event is honored to present 2011 World Championship Hoop Dancer Tony Duncan from Mesa, Arizona. Entertainment highlights include: Championship Plains Indian Dancers, Evelio Flores’ Aztec Dancers- Mitotiliztli Yaoyollohtli, Southern Drum-Bear Claw Singers; Apache story teller-Gregory Gomez, President of the Indigenous Institute of the Americas, and Native American Artisans representing Tribes/Nations/Pueblos throughout the United States.
This year’s event will host a special children’s activity center for education, demonstrations, interactive arts/crafts, face painting and traditional storytelling. Families will have the opportunity to view children’s books by Native authors, a “Now and Then” display connecting today’s products with Indigenous cultures and an Indigenous “grocery store” sponsored by the Memnosyne Foundation. The “grocery store” will reflect the contributions Indigenous people of the Americas have made to the current world’s agricultural survival. Dr. Patrisia Gonzales –Kickapoo-University of Arizona –will discuss “food as medicine” at the grocery store. Bilingual volunteers will be available in the booth.
Featured Guest Artists are Judy and Lincoln Tafoya. The Tafoyas are 6th generation potters who have received national recognition for their unique and treasured Santa Clara Pueblo pottery. They have been featured in prestigious magazines, books and art markets. Judy Tafoya recently won First Place at Red Earth Festival in Traditional Pottery. The Tafoyas will be demonstrating their pottery techniques throughout the event.
