Experience the talented young musicians of the Santa Barbara Youth Symphony in the 2012 opening Concert. Under Music Director Andy Radford, young musicians from the Santa Barbara Youth Symphony and cello soloist Vincent Chen will perform Cello Concerto No. 9 in B-flat Major, G. 482 by Luigi Boccherini. The Youth Symphony will also perform Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture (Fingal’s Cave), Op. 26 and Symphony No. 5, Op. 107 The Reformation; and Overture to the opera Orpheus in the Underworld by French composer Jacques Offenbach.
The concert features Youth Symphony members who, by audition, perform as soloists with the Youth Symphony. Cello soloist Vincent Chen is a junior at Dos Pueblos High School, and has played with the Youth Symphony since sixth grade. He began studying the cello with Alita Rhodes at age 9 and currently studies with Ervin Klinkon. This summer, Vincent was admitted into the Music Academy of the West’s MERIT (Music Education Reinforces Intellect and Talent) Program, where he studied with rising musical artists from across the country. Vincent also premiered as a soloist in the MERIT Program’s concluding concert. As a 2012 Santa Barbara Music Club Scholarship Competition winner, Vincent also performed in the Club’s showcase concert. In his spare time, Vincent enjoys swimming, reading, playing the cello, and listening to music.
