Batalero/congero Sandy Perez brings a wealth of knowledge to the stage. Perez, a descendant of the legendary Villamil family, is a world recognized master percussionist and instructor. He was the principal percussionist for twelve years with Grupo Afro-Cuba de Matanzas, known as the originators of Bata Rumba, and famed for their mastery of the full spectrum of Afro-Cuban folkloric music and dance. Sandy's open-minded approach has enabled him to adapt to styles ranging from Cuban popular to fusion and avant-garde jazz. He has been featured at the Havana Jazz Festival and the Afrocubanismo! Festival (Banff, Canada), and has performed with world luminaries Steve Coleman, Anga Daaz, Yosvany Terry, Youssou N'Dour, and others.
