The Bay Area’s very own, Jon Nakamatsu, Van Cliburn Competition Gold Medalist, has this to say about the International Russian Music Piano Competition:
**********"We are so fortunate to have the International Russian Music Piano Competition right here in San Jose. An organization of the highest caliber, this annual event showcases some of the world's most talented young pianists. I encourage you to attend and revel in the music (not all Russian!) and the competitive excitement. In doing so, you will support the performing arts in San Jose and help make this a cultural capital of Northern California."
**********It’s the best kept secret in Bay Area classical music. It’s the only one of its kind in Northern California. It’s the 13th Annual International Russian Music Piano Competition and it’s happening at Le Petit Trianon Theatre in downtown San Jose from Fri., June 1 through Sun., June 10.
***********More than 100 contestants from 12 different countries (Armenia, Australia, Canada, China, Georgia, Japan, Mexico, Mongolia, Russia, S. Korea, Taiwan, and of course the U.S.) and some of the most talented young pianists in the world, will compete in four different age categories, from ages 6 to 32.
***********There is, of course, an emphasis on music by great Russian composers (Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev, Scriabin, etc.), but there’s also plenty of music by great non-Russian composers as well (J.S. Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Debussy, etc.).
**********The daily competition is open to the public and is ~*FREE*~. And for those of you with children learning to play a musical instrument or teachers with music students, what better way for them to see what the right combination of talent, hard work and dedication can lead to?
**********There are ticketed events as well, including a concert on Sun., June 3rd, with Russian-born, Gold Medal winning Israeli pianist, Yoni Levyatov, to benefit the American Red Cross Silicon Valley Chapter. Other ticketed events include:
*********** The Gala Opening Concert featuring distinguished members of the competition jury who are also world-class pianists, including Van Cliburn Medalist, Antonio Pompa-Baldi (Fri., June 1st)
*********** The Advanced Category Final Round with Chamber Music Piano Trio (Sat., June 9th)
*********** The Winner's Concert with Awards Ceremony and wine and chocolate reception (Sun., June 10th)
**********All competition events will take place at Le Petit Trianon Theatre in downtown San Jose at 75 N. 5th St. (½ block from the new City Hall).
***********If you enjoy classical music, you will enjoy The 13th Annual International Russian Music Piano Competition. And find out for yourself why it's the best kept secret in Bay Area classical music.
