The San Francisco Symphony (SFS) rings in the Lunar New Year and the Year of the Dog with its annual Chinese New Year Celebration on February 1. The concert will feature a unique blend of Eastern and Western music, instruments, and artists. Two dynamic soloists will perform alongside the San Francisco Symphony: Wu Man, an internationally renowned virtuoso of the pipa (the Chinese lute) performing music by Tan Dun, and 18-year-old piano prodigy Yuja Wang performing the Grieg Piano Concerto. The program also includes a new work by Bay Area composer Gang Situ written especially for this concert, featuring members of Chinese music ensemble Melody of China performing with traditional instruments. The San Francisco Symphony Chinese New Year Celebration begins with the Festival Reception one hour prior to the concert, with the Davies Symphony Hall lobby filled with lion dancers, fortune tellers, a prize-filled raffle, Chinese desserts and traditional Chinese music.
