Another of John Cassavetes' offspring takes the leap into directing a feature film. Following the lead of brother Nick, Zoe Cassavetes has made this at times charming if awfully derivative romantic comedy her first full-length movie after a career in commercials and short films. Parker Posey stars as yet another single Manhattanite panicking because all her friends are finding mates while she keeps going out with mismatches. Posey does her best to bring this stereotype to life, and her quirky mannerisms are affecting, up to a point. She hooks up with a seemingly uncomplicated Frenchman (Melvil Poupaud, last seen dying in François Ozon's "Time to Leave''), whose main problem is that he lives in Paris. Scenes of her seeking him out in the City of Light are a tad too reminiscent of "Before Sunset'' and the final episodes of "Sex and the City.'' The director's own mother, Gena Rowlands, is seen too briefly as Posey's mom, who nags her in a loving way.
