Taking a cue from the outrageously popular and festively irreverent international phenomenon of SantaCon, San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus Music Director Dr. Timothy Seelig has announced a hip holiday program entitled "SantaConCert" for the organization's seasonal concerts to be held this 35th anniversary year.
The December 6 Davies Hall "SantaConCert" program will feature two wildly divergent halves. Beginning with an elegant, formal big chorus sound and the full 60-piece Bay Area Rainbow Symphony, SFGMC will treat the audience to a feast of classic seasonal music by top arrangers from all over the country. First-half selections will include a stunning arrangement of "The Little Drummer Boy", "The Carol of the Bells" arranged by Barlow Bradford, "Seasonal Sounds"-a secular holiday medley arranged by Randol Bass, arranger for such organizations as the Boston Pops, the New York Philharmonic and the Bohemian Club-San Francisco composer Clark Sterling's first choral version of "Christmas by the Bay" and more, setting a classic and warm-hearted tone for the holidays.
For the second half of the Davies Hall concert merry mayhem will be unleashed SantaCon style as all 275 choristers take the stage dressed as Santa Claus for a musical "splash" mob careening through a whirlwind of musical gems set in a scripted story about Santa's and their pre-Christmas assignments to help mankind. Santa songs will abound, plus holiday-transformed Broadway show tunes, a tipsy Florence Foster Jenkins-inspired appearance by Mrs. Claus (who may be Santa's second beard . . .), a tiny trio of industrious elves and more.
The December 6 concert will include a benefit for the Make A Wish Foundation.
