Horace Tapscott Bio
Musical Genius Horace Tapscott began his career at the young age of 14 with the invitation of renowned jazz trumpeter Gerald Wilson. While performing with Wilson he met and performed with many jazz legends such as Wardell Grey, Dexter Gordon, Quincy Jones and Great Duke Ellington. Horace Tapscott founded Union of God’s Musician and Artist (U.G.M.A.A.) and formed the Pan African Peoples Arkestra (P.A.P.A.). Through these organizations he trained and taught many musicians and artist who have become recognized internationally. Horace was well known for his genius and smile. Horace was very outspoken about racism, politics, stereotypes, and social ethics. As a result, he was considered a risk and became black-listed from the music industry in the early 1970's. Horace did not allow the industry to slow him down and this “dark” period has been coined as his most creative period. In the 1980s, he emerged as one of jazz’s most sought after pianists. Tapscott continued playing, composing, producing, and touring around the world until his death.
Horace Tapscott’s works will be performed in concert by Tapscott Alumni the Cosmic View Band- Ernest and Ray Straughter, Azar Lawrence, Wendell Williams, Oscar Brown Jr., Carnell Fowler, “TMO” Terry Moore, and special guest Tapscott Alumni Arthur Blythe on Alto Sax.
