Emerging as the most promising Italian tenor of his generation -- the latest in a tradition that includes such legends as Caruso, Gigli, di Stefano, Bergonzi, and Pavarotti -- Licitra became the toast of the opera world in 2002 for his triumphant performance at the Metropolitan Opera in replacement of the ailing Luciano Pavarotti.
