The 12th Century saw the Crusaders invade the Holy Land in an attempt to control the holy sites. Forced to defend their positions against determined resistance by the Arab states in the region, the Crusaders constructed some of the greatest examples of military architecture on earth. Their chief opponent was Saladin, a Kurdish leader who united the Muslims against the European invaders. His skill and determination saw the eventual destruction of the Kingdom of Jerusalem.
