AGENDA: Puppet (Automating and Managing System Builds and Configuration Part 2)
Last month John Stern talked about methods of automating system builds with Kickstart, and also various package management tools and techniques. Chris covered an open source network auditing and management system called Open Audit. Puppet was also mentioned, but time didn't allow us to go into much detail at all. Since there was a good amount of interest in Puppet, it will be the topic of this month's meeting.
Taken from the Puppet website, "Put simply, Puppet is a system for
automating system administration tasks. Puppet lets you perform normal administrative tasks (such as adding users, installing packages, and updating server configurations) on any number of systems, even if those systems are running completely different operating systems. Through the use of providers, Puppet takes a generic instruction from you (such as ensuring MySQL is installed) and performs the task the "right way" for each system."
