RVA Barista Jam March 24, 2010

So you've heard about the RVA Barista Jam; Great! Now you're thinking, "what is a barista jam"? Great question. Most people are amazed to hear there is a vibrant, thriving worldwide competitive circuit for both professional and amateur baristas. The fact is, people, in general, love competition, and just like chefs, musicians, hula hoopers and cowboys; baristas are no exception. Barista competitions are huge events involving competitors and spectators from around the world and there is big money and notoriety at stake. These competitions are very formal in structure and guidelines which often makes them very intimidating to the average barista.

A Barista Jam is the less formal, jeans and tee shirt wearing cousin of the Barista Competition. The Jam offers an environment where local baristas can show off their skill and creativity in a friendly competitive environment among their peers. For many participants, this will be their only outlet into the competitive barista world, and others will use events like this as a jumping off point for future regional and national competitions. Above all else though, the Barista Jam is a way to have a lot of fun with people who share the same job or interest, try some great drinks and maybe take home some cash!

It is our hope that the RVA Barista Jam will become a regular part of the Richmond Coffee Industry. We'll be holding Jams throughout the spring and summer at different shops throughout the city, so shine up that tamper, fine tune your espresso and tighten up that foam!
