Join indie-gypsy-rock group DeVotchka and special guests as they explore the compelling and controversial underground musical movement known as the Russian Chanson. With roots in pre-revolutionary, anti-establishment Russia, chanson has evolved as "the soundtrack of contemporary Russia," reflecting imagery of injustice and disappointments of Russian life. The forbidden-but-cherished songs and philosophy of this "second culture" genre will be reinterpreted by the moody and textured Denver band, known for its Grammy-nominated score for Little Miss Sunshine, plus special guest Saul Williams, as they sing of the universal truths of pain, oppression, criminality, and love.
