Russian ballet has had a profound influence on dance, music and design across Europe, America and Australia in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The Ballets Russes, established by brilliant entrepreneur Sergei Diaghilev, brought the spectacular dancing of Pavlova and Nijinsky to the world stage together with the vivid designs of Bakst, the extraordinary choreography of Fokine, Balanchine and Massine, and the music of Stravinsky. This tradition was continued by the new generations of Russian dancers and choreographers, from Balanchin to Ulanova, Nuriev, Baryshnikov and contemporary ballet dancers and choreographers. Join us as, through discussions, extracts from films and documentaries, music and images, we look at the world of the Russian ballet in thebroad socio-cultural and political context, and the remarkable lives of those who have shaped it.
