The Ruby Room, a Seattle nonprofit that provides free formal gowns to teens whose families are struggling financially, will hold a dress drive on Sat., Sept. 19, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at their Capital Hill boutique in the basement of the Richard Hugo House.
Accessories and plus size gowns are especially welcome during the dress drive.
Gowns are distributed to teens during the many boutique events the Ruby Room holds throughout the spring and fall. In addition to gowns, teens can select matching jewelry, hand bags, shoes and beauty samples, all free of charge.
“We gave away over 350 gowns during the 2009 prom season,” says Nyla Bittermann, director of the Ruby Room. “That’s a 40% increase over 2008. Seattle families are working harder to make ends meet and we want to help. The dress drive will help ensure every student can fully participate in their high school community, regardless of their financial situation.”
If you or someone you know needs a gown or if you would like to volunteer, please contact the Ruby Room for more information: www.rubyroomseattle.org.
