Rube Waddell, San Francisco’s foremost junkyard-band, headlines a stellar show at 12 Galaxies on Friday, July 7th to celebrate the release of their newest album entitled "Greatest Hits."
This group who first came to be known 12 years ago for their guerrilla “Live at Leeds (Shoe store)” street corner performances, have continued to incite and attract audiences through their recordings and their continued raucous appearances around the Bay Area and abroad. Their fourth album offers 16 all new, independently produced tracks that take the listener from the Latin influences of S.F.’s Mission District, up through a healthy dose of Lo-Fi swamp-punk blues, to eclectic soundscapes of sea shanties and Armenian melodies. And that is just to name a few of the flavors to be found on this new collection.
Named for the eccentrically brilliant and at times erratic baseball player/alligator wrestler/fire engine chaser, George Edward “Rube” Waddell, the band is made up of four multi-instrumentalists who perform their own breed of modern Americana music. Their songs mix Blues, Folk, Celtic, Country, Rock, Punk, Banda, Vaudeville, and Near-East ditties into a stew stirred with a varied array of instruments such as ukuleles, accordion, guitars, tin cans, toy piano, washboards, harmonica, trumpet, sousaphone, banjo, tabla, and odd-ball homemade musical contraptions.
The evening features two other exciting SF groups who, like the Rubes, bring their own innovative and diverse sensibilities to American music.
The Kehoe Nation is captained by Bryan Kehoe, best known for his guitar wizardry with the legendary Northern California group M.I.R.V., Les Claypoole’s Frog Brigade, and Ministry. Playing a potent cocktail of country and polka performed with a punk-metal swagger, they have created a fresh new sound by mixing the “psychobilly”instrumentation of drums, stand-up bass, and reverb-drenched guitar with the timbres of bass clarinet, accordion, and antique orchestral percussion.
The Runaway Truck Tramps are a quintet who put a new spin on the genre of alternative folk-country. They will be opening the evening with a unique brand of clever, uke- driven, finger snappin’ dirges and ditties of social misadventures and hangovers.
