Considered one of the greatest percussion ensembles on the planet, the Royal Drummers and Dancers of Burundi have been touring the world since the 1960's. The vibrant power and precision of their performances were traditionally a part of particular ceremonies such as births, funerals and the enthronements of kings. In Burundi, their music is considered sacred and represents, along with the king, the powers of fertility and regeneration. But the heart-stopping rhythms have crossed social and cultural barriers worldwide. Spectators at their concerts rarely remain indifferent to the complex and compelling sounds and dance the musicians create.
