Bring your blankets, chairs and picnic baskets to Maymont's rose-filled Italian Garden for an enjoyable evening of Shakespearean entertainment in honor of the garden's centennial celebration. Elizabethan jesters, actors and musicians will bring the Old World experience to life.
Every guest will have the best seat in the house on the grass above the terrace. Musicians will play period music on a small stage, while the actors perform Shakespearean sonnets and a few scenes from the Bards classics, including the dance scene from Romeo and Juliet. Jesters will keep the audience entertained from other sites on the terrace throughout the evening.
Maymont's Italian Garden is currently celebrating 100 years of roses and romance. Noland and Baskervill of Richmond designed James and Sallie Dooleys' Italian Garden, using elements of the classical style developed in Italy in the 15th and 16th centuries as their model. Today, the garden's exquisite stonework, statuary, gazebos, fountains and, of course, beautiful flowers, shrubs and trees are unmatched by any other public garden.
