Romare Bearden Mural 'The City and its People' October 2, 2009

The city of Berkeley is making available access to view the Romare Bearden mural located in the City Council chambers in the old city hall building in honor of the kick off of the East Bay Cultural Corridor. This mural was chosen by the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC to be the centerpiece of a five city national tour of the art of the late African American artist. The city of Berkeley uses part of this mural as the logo for the city and is unique in having an African American artist depict the design image that represents the city from business cards to city vehicles. Like the Civic Center Art Exhibition above, the city has embraced the arts into its very offices and logo.

This event celebrates the launch of the new four-city East Bay Culture Corridor. Recognizing that the arts are a significant, affirming and transformational force in civic life, regional economies and education, the cities of Berkeley, Emeryville, Oakland and Richmond have come together in a nationally unprecedented partnership to promote their arts in a new East Bay Culture Corridor (EBCC). The EBCC will be formally launched October 2 with public events that run through the month in celebration of the collaboration and a news conference at which the Mayors of the participating cities will inaugurate a new 510Arts.com website.
