In February of 2008, replicating the methodology employed by much of its thematic cinematic offerings, ToRo looked at the New Wave of Romanian cinema through the past’s hourglass.
The wind has passed, the waters have settled; with clearer heads, now is the time to look at what the tide has brought in. Metaphors aside, it is the resilience of a movement’s surge that will determine its duration; as this preview (as well as the festival-proper) will show, the resurrection of Romanian Cinema foreshadowed a prolific future.
First on the inspection block are the formative years of the Romanian film industry within the walls of the National University of Theatre and Cinematic Arts, a locus of fresh talent to which Romania’s national cinema looks to continue its already established international fame.
Catalin Mitulescu (The Way I Spent the End of the World), Corneliu Porumboiu (12:08 East of Bucharest), Cristian Mungiu (4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days) have all mastered their craft at UNATC, and as such, the romaniancinemanow will showcase a roster of Romania’s most artistic and promising emerging student filmmakers from UNATC.
Interior. Block of Flats Hallway (Ciprian Alexandrescu, 2008), Late (Paul Negoescu, 2008), Sandpit #186 (Adina Pintilie, 2007), My Unfinished Films (Eva Pervolovici, 2008) are some of the short films that will complete the award-winning programme.
The night’s special guests, Tereza Barta and Laurence Green, Associate Professors at York University’s Production Department of Film, will introduce the films and provide a platform of discussion for the night’s programme.
