ROHAN DE SARAM
"Rohan de Saram is a cello phenomenon, one of the greatest of our time." Kölnische Rundshau (Cologne)
Renowned for his consummate technique and peerless rhythmic control, the Sri Lankan-born cellist opens the program with a set of solo pieces: Elliott Carter's Figments I and II , Roger Reynolds' Focus a beam, emptied of thinking, outward..., Iannis Xenakis' Kottos, and Luciano Berio's Sequenza XIV —a mesmerizing signature work, written for de Saram, in which the cello serves as both string instrument and otherworldly drum kit. De Saram, formerly of the illustrious Arditti Quartet, then teams up with a foursome featuring violinist Mark Menzies and cellist Erika Duke-Kirkpatrick for a rare performance of Franz Schubert's String Quintet in C major – one of the greatest works ever written for strings.
