Roem Baur is a San Francisco based singer-songwriter with a "stirring vocal range and a passion for his music" (Nina Ragonese, WMATT) that proves to be worthy of the unusual distinction of his epithet (which came to his young, single mother in a dream shortly before he was born). A classically trained tenor with a four octave range and award-winning singer (MAMA and Elly Awards), Baur has begun to distinguish himself in the San Francisco scene with his unconventional takes on blues, soul and folk music coupled with the wit and energy he brings to his live performances. Baur's song work also draws inspiration from 60's folk music, his early operatic training and years of touring internationally in choirs. Describing what inspires him, he says, “When I listen to great soul singers, like the late Etta James for example, I just listen to her sing a simple line, and there’s truth and brokenness, it’s internal. There is anger, triumph--everything. There is a complete story happening in every line. That’s a lesson for me.” As he takes the leap from performing singer-songwriter to a fuller, more realized sound, Baur's band will include organ, tuba, bass trombone, guitar and drums. "The new band is a concept I've had running around my head for years - orchestra meets blues and soul. When the right talents come together and the planets align... you get a chance to do something really special. This sound is hard to explain even to fellow musicians who haven't heard it. It's something you feel."

When Aly Tadros was offered her first paid gig, she had three songs under her belt. The set time called for two hours.

She took it anyway.

With a voice as angelic as it is weather beaten, and music NPR Austin calls “delightfully wistful indie folk with tender and earnest roots,” Aly Tadros has spent the last decade traveling across Egypt, Turkey, Mexico, and Europe. Banned with a classical and acoustic guitars, ukulele, and traditional Mexican vihuela, there’s no denying her travels have informed the breadth of her songwriting, noted best for its intimacy, honesty and lyricism.

Tadros has played over 600 stages across North America and Europe in her four years as a touring artist. She also helped to form The Sweetness, a Toronto/Austin based collective of singer/songwriters. Just two weeks after forming as a band, The Sweetness raised over $6,000, toured Europe, and traveled across North America with a German documentary film crew commissioned by the Stuttgart FilmAkademie. The film is set for release in 2013.

This year has been her most exciting yet – with invitations to showcase at The Folk Alliance International Conference (The Sweetness), CMJ, and endorsements from both Guild and Fender Guitars. Her sophomore album, The Fits, was produced by Duane Lundy (Jim James, Ben Sollee, These United States), and is set for release January 15, 2013.

The psychedelic explorations and folk troubadour inclinations of young Californian Irvin Dally are informed equally by his nomadic trajectory and his introspective clarity. Dally lived in a variety of climates throughout the country, raised in southern Illinois as a preacher’s son, came of age in Colorado, grew in Spain, and found himself in Sacramento and Santa Rosa before setting up permanent shop outside Los Angeles.

This transience inspires the sonically transmigratory music he’s played since 2005. Self taught and self styled, Dally cut his teeth as a member of Sacramento’s Brother before recording bedroom folk expansive enough to knock down all four walls. While rustic vocals, dusty guitar laments, and ornate washes of analog hiss and angelic, dream-like textures are hallmarks of Dally’s brand of reverberated mindbending folk, the breadth of his current catalog has reared both grainy pop gems and rollicking experimental suites.

His cassette release “The Countryside of Southern Illinois and the Daydreams That Almost Got Me to 19 Years” reveals a single, multi-movement song, admirable in its adventurous spirit and precise focus over the course of 26 minutes. While reminiscent of spirit warriors Jana Hunter and The Incredible String Band, Irvin Dally is a singular and unique voice – the sound of exploring guitars and analog instrumentation to its fully realization.
