The Wakes, Selborne, Hampshire
Alton, England GU34 3JH

In the same year as Gilbert White published 'The Natural History of Selborne' 1789, Robert Marsham's 'Indications of Spring' were reported to the Royal Society. Like White, Marsham kept meticulously detailed records of seasonal weather, temperature changes, flowering dates of individual plants and migrating birds. The two pioneers of Natural History began a correspondence that lasted until White's death three years later, becoming close friends in that time, although they never met. Dr Tim Sparks from the Centre of Ecology and Hydrology has co-authored a biography of Robert Marsham and brings his enthusiasm and knowledge to this fascinating talk.
Talk held at the Field Studies Centre.
Cost: £10.50 including wine or soft drink and nibbles.
