The Riverhead Blue Masques will be performing the 1967 screenplay, "Up the Down Staircase". The original novel was written by Bel Kaufman and later the screenplay was written by Ted Mosel. In the play, an unfamiliar New York City highschool teacher "comes face to face with the adolescence". She is horrified by the hate the students have for Calvin Coolidge Highschool; throughout the play Ms. Sylvia Barrett tries to give them a positive outlook on their education. She struggles with the fact she could receive better treatment from elsewhere, teaching at Willowdale Academy for instance. Will she succeed at gaining the students' respect and give them a reason to stay in school? Or will she go teach a lesson on Chaucer at Willowdale Academy with a preferrable environment? Come see the show to find out!
Tickets are sold for $8 at the door. Food and beverages will be sold at intermission.
