The Thacher Gallery at USF presents “Revolution 9: The Ninth Annual Thacher Student Showcase” from May 2 to July 7, 2008. An opening reception and awards ceremony will take place on Friday, May 2 from 4 to 6 p.m.

Revolution 9 features over 40 works of art by juniors and seniors from the visual art and media studies programs at the University of San Francisco. Selected by a jury of arts faculty and a visiting artist and coordinated by students from the Arts Management program, the pieces range from fine arts to architecture, graphic design to video. Some artists use reclaimed materials to create works that appeal to conventional ideas of beauty; others use old traditions to explore new ideas.
As the title suggests, the themes explored in Revolution 9, are inspired by the forward-thinking outlook of the artists. The works question our ideas about the body, investigate the artist’s relationship to the environment, and challenge the distinction between text and image. For example, Dinsmore’s watercolor collage, Scandinavia, 1968, is a whimsical exploration of travel and what the artist describes as “memories and souvenirs.” William Allan Jacobson’s self-portraits remind us that homophobia exists even in friendly realms. The exhibit also includes a variety of three-dimensional pieces including Thathiah Bradley’s innovative Recordbot, a “trashed” toy that is frighteningly cute. Another noteworthy piece will be a prototype of a wind turbine designed by Victor Etienne for use in a sustainable housing project in Liberia and is made from a recycled treadmill motor and PVC pipe. Seen together, the works in this exhibit challenge the boundaries of the public and private, the personal and political.
The recipients of the two annual awards—the Mary Thacher Prize for the best work(s) in technique and style in the exhibition, and the Gloria Osuna Pérez Award for the work(s) which best address social and community issues—will be announced at the reception.
