Rethinking Education Schools for a New Era: An Address by James G. Cibulka, President of NCATE February 26, 2009

For years, colleges of education have come under fire from critics on the left and right who have charged them with mediocrity, ideological agendas, and a failure to recruit and prepare excellent educators. Meanwhile, the national teaching landscape in the last decade has been altered by innovations like High Tech High, a California K–12 school that created its own college of education; New York’s Hunter College, which partners with charter school providers to offer a novel teacher preparation program; and organizations like Teach For America and the New Teacher Project, which have supplied thousands of teachers nationwide. What is the future of teacher preparation and colleges of education in this changing landscape? Can education schools transform themselves to meet the demands of the twenty-first century? James G. Cibulka, president of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, the professional accrediting organization for schools, colleges, and departments of education in the United States, and former dean of the College of Education at the University of Kentucky, will sketch his vision for the role of colleges of education in this new era.
