Research: The Surprise of Discovery May 21, 2012

The Crossroads Cultural Center of Houston, St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital and the University of St. Thomas will present a lecture on Research: The Surprise of Discovery from 6:30-8 p.m. on Monday, May 21 in Denton A. Cooley Auditorium, Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital, 6729 Bertner St.

The topic of this event is scientific research, considered as specifically human activity. There is a common misconception that to be objective, scientific work must also be impersonal, but the experience of many great scientists shows this is not the case. The ultimate engine of scientific research is human curiosity and desire. What does it mean to “research?” What is the role of the “human factor” in the development of scientific knowledge? What does it reveal about the scientist as a human being? What role can science play in answering the human desire for knowledge and what are its limitations?

The Speakers are Mauro Ferrari, PhD, president, CEO and Ernest Cockrell Jr. Distinguished Endowed Chair at Methodist Hospital Research Center, and Emerson C. Perin, MD, PhD, director of clinical
research for cardiovascular medicine and stem cell research at the Texas Heart Institute.
