The Branigan Cultural Center presents “By George!” Quilt lovers will have an excellent opportunity to view a variety of artistically created quilts when the President’s Challenge exhibit of the Las Colcheras Quilt Guild is displayed from Friday, February 4, 2011 through Saturday, February 26, 2011.
“By George!” the theme of the 2011 President’s Challenge exhibit, presents the exciting possibility for a wide variety of interpretations in the use of George Mendoza’s fabrics. Mr. Mendoza, now a Las Cruces resident, was a promising high-school athlete when a degenerative eye disorder caused legal blindness. Mr. Mendoza’s talents remained intact as he became a world-class runner, a motivational speaker and a full-time artist. His colorful art has become a 100-percent cotton fabric collection that debuted at the International Quilt Market Show in October 2009.
The Las Colcheras Quilt Guild will hold hand quilting demonstrations on Wednesday and Saturday mornings from 9am to 12pm throughout the month of February at the Cultural Center. They welcome visitors to view their work and to ask questions about their craft.
An opening reception with light refreshments takes place at the Branigan Cultural Center from 5:00PM – 7:00PM, Friday, February 4 during the Downtown Ramble on the downtown mall. Awards are to be presented at 5:30PM.
The Branigan Cultural Center is located at the north end of the Downtown Mall in Las Cruces at 501 N. Main Street. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 9AM to 4:30PM.
