"Shakespeare's laundry bills" is the mocking term sometimes applied to archival research in the arts, as if dry documents can never add to our understanding of art. In the study of Dutch art, this attitude was overturned when hundreds of revealing nuggets were dug up by Amsterdam archivists, when economic historians demonstrated patterns that could only be found in the archives, and when the inventory and auction records in the Getty Provenance Index became an indispensible resource. Gary Schwartz, who has been following and participating in these developments for many years, reconnoiters the field with regard to Rembrandt research for the third annual lecture of the Project for the Study of Collecting and Provenance (PSCP). An initiative of the Getty Research Institute and the University of Southern California's Program in the History of Collecting and Display, the PSCP supports the study of art collecting by broadening accessibility of its resources to researchers, establishing links with neighboring research institutions and around the world, and by hosting and participating in conferences, workshops, and scholarly meetings. Gary Schwartz's lecture will be followed by a reception.
