The first Refugee Rights Day was April 4, 1985, the day when the Supreme Court of Canada released its first decision about refugees based on the Canadian Constitution, the Singh decision. The Court said that refugee claimants were entitled to an oral hearing before decision makers in a process conforming to the fundimental principles of justice under Section 7 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and Section 2e of the Canadian Bill of Rights.
