Reframing the Access to Medicines Debate: Health as a Global Public Good - Presentation by Jeffrey Sturchio February 23, 2012

In recent decades, the benefits of new medicines and vaccines from pharmaceutical research and development have transformed the health of populations living in developed economies. Yet billions of people living in poverty have not yet benefited from these innovations. Dr. Sturchio will explore the reasons why so many have limited access to such abundant resources; how growing awareness of this disparity has led to a global movement to improve the availability of and access to medicines and vaccines; and what still needs to be done to secure the supply of health as a global public good.

Jeffrey L. Sturchio is senior partner at RabinMartin, a leading global consultancy working at the crossroads of health, and former president & CEO of the Global Health Council. Before joining the Council in 2009, Dr. Sturchio was vice president of Corporate Responsibility at Merck & Co. Inc., president of The Merck Company Foundation and chairman of the U. S. Corporate Council on Africa, whose 150 member companies represent some 85 percent of total US private sector investment in Africa. He is also currently a visiting scholar at the Institute for Applied Economics, Global Health and the Study of Business Enterprise at The Johns Hopkins University, a senior associate of the Global Health Policy Center at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He received an AB in history from Princeton University and a PhD in the history and sociology of science from the University of Pennsylvania.
