Produced by Midtown/Sheri Grace Productions, REEFER MADNESS: The HIT Musical! is coming back by popular demand after SOLD OUT houses in January and February!
CRITICS PRAISED THIS SHOW in January:
"One of the funniest things we'll see on stage locally in 2009... crisp and clever... staging creative... productions numbers are hilarious." - Dan Conover, Charleston City Paper
"A laugh your ass off, SMASH HIT musical!" - Steve Lepre, Director/Producer
Inspired by the original 1936 propaganda film of the same name, REEFER MADNESS: The HIT Musical! originally opened in LA in 1999 and moved to New York in 2001. The original film was meant as a cautionary tale to keep young people away from marijuana. Over the years the movie's exaggerated acting and ham-fisted dialogue turned it into a cult favorite of grade-B movie lovers. REEFER MADNESS: The HIT Musical! is a tongue-in-cheek take on that film – and the hysteria it was meant to cause at the time of its making - when clean-cut, all-American teens, Jimmy Harper and Mary Lane, fall prey to marijuana, leading them on a hysterical downward spiral filled with sex, violence, and of course, evil jazz music.
The campy musical comedy, with music by Dan Studney, lyrics by Kevin Murphy, and a book by the duo, has a clever and catchy “Little Shop-pop style score.” The numbers range from big Broadway-style showstoppers to beautiful, melodic love ballads.
The cast features a live band and 14 singer/dancer/actors, including musical theatre notables Kathy Summer, Brandon Joyner, Krissy McKown, Robbie Thomas and Randy Risher. Directed By Ryan Ahlert with musical direction by Robbi Kenney
