Union Square Park - North Plaza
Discarded computers and other consumer electronics (so-called e-waste) are the fastest growing portion of our waste stream. It is estimated that in New York City, 34,000 tons of electronic equipment get tossed into the trash every year.
The Lower East Side Ecology Center started its community-based e-waste recycling program in 2002 and is committed to offer e-waste recycling days throughout the year and in all five boroughs!
The following will be accepted: working and non-working computers (laptops, desktops, servers), monitors, printers, scanners, keyboards, mice, cables, TV's, VCRs, PDAs, fax machines, cell phones, pagers, and stereo/audio equipment.
Discarded computers and electronics are toxic hazardous waste!
It is estimated that 315 million computers will become obsolete in the United States and that they contain a total of more than 1.2 billion pounds of lead. About 40% of the heavy metals in landfills - including lead, mercury and cadmium - come from discarded electronic equipment. The negative health effects of lead are well known, but also consider this: just 1/70th of a teaspoon of mercury can contaminate 20 acres of a lake, making the fish unfit to eat.

We'd like to thank the Parks Department for hosting this event.
