Recital: Thomas Rosenberg and Nicola Melville November 6, 2005

Thomas Rosenberg, adjunct instructor of cello at Carleton College, will present a recital along with assistant professor of music Nicola Melville, on Sunday, Nov. 6, at 3 p.m. in the Carleton College Concert Hall. The program includes works by Schumann, Vivaldi, Rachmaninoff and Beethoven. The event is free and open to the public.

Rosenberg is a nationally known performer. He is a member of the Artaria String Quartet as well as the Veblen Piano Trio, along with Melville and Associate Professor of Music Hector Valdivia. He has performed with the Minnesota Orchestra, Lyra Concert and numerous other chamber ensembles. He was a founding member of the highly acclaimed Chester String Quartet, with whom he made numerous recordings and performed throughout the United States, Canada, Central America and Europe. He has received top chamber music prizes at competitions in Munich, Germany, and Portsmouth, England, as well as in Chicago?s ?Discovery? Competition. The Boston Globe has praised Rosenberg for displaying ?beautifully inflected, noble playing with a gorgeous dark tone.?

Rosenberg is a graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and holds a master?s degree from the Eastman School of Music, where he was a teaching assistant to world renowned artist teachers Paul Katz and Laurence Lesser. In addition to Carleton, Rosenberg teaches at Macalester College and the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, where he coordinates the string chamber music program.

Melville, a native of New Zealand, has won several awards in her home country including the National Concerto Competition and the TVNZ Young Artists Competition. She has toured extensively in the South Pacific, Europe and the United States. Melville received her master?s and doctorate of music from the Eastman School of Music, where she was awarded the Lizzie T. Mason Prize for outstanding graduate pianist and the performer?s certificate.
