Come to a First Friday reception celebrating a new nine-foot bronze sculpture of Benjamin Franklin in historic Old CIty Philadelphia. Refreshments! Live music!
In 2003, the city selected Philly sculptor James Peniston to replace the much-loved but deteriorated "Penny Franklin" work. James enlisted local schoolchildren to help create a monumental bronze bust entitled "Keys To Community." The kids donated nearly 1.5 million pennies and more than 1,000 keys. Funded in part by the Philadelphia Fire Department, the sculpture was installed Oct. 3 in a historic courtyard next to the Engine 8 firehouse. The sculpture will be dedicated at 10 a.m.; this announcement is for an evening reception.
