Receiving Effective Healthcare Communication for Deaf & Hard of Hearing May 14, 2009

On Thursday, May 14, Deaf Independent Living Association, Inc. (DILA) is hosting a free, informative seminar regarding “Effective Communication for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in a Healthcare Setting.” The workshop is being held at the Queen Anne’s County Art Council, 206 S. Commerce St, Centreville, MD and begins at 11:30am for individuals that are deaf or have a hearing loss to better explain their rights for “receiving” effective communication under Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) when receiving healthcare. Open to the general public and all are welcome to attend. Interpreters provided.

Presenter, Mrs. Kim Pudans-Smith, will give an in-depth presentation on this very complex topic. She is a deaf interpreter, a member of the Maryland Association of the Deaf (MDAD) and National Association of the Deaf (NAD), has taught Communication Sciences and Disorders as wells as Deaf Studies, is currently an ASL Program Coordinator at Gallaudet University and has a strong background in the ADA.

These workshops are held in collaboration with DILA, the Governor’s Office for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and the Maryland Association of the Deaf.
