Reading: Ted Mathys November 3, 2005

Ted Mathys, poet and Carleton graduate, will give a poetry reading on Thursday, Nov. 3, at 4:30 p.m. at Carleton College Gould Library Athenaeum. A book signing will follow. The event is free and open to the public.

Mathys recently published his first book of poetry, titled ?Forge,? now available through Minnesota?s Coffee House Press. According to poet Cole Swensen, ?This is some first book! It opens with a haunting twist on the creation myth and keeps on opening into big poems that are architecturally complex and socially attentive.?

Mathys? poetry has appeared in numerous journals such as The Canary, Colorado Review, Indiana Review, Quarterly West, Verse and Web Conjunctions. He has presented readings at venues such as Cody?s Books in Berkeley, Calif., Hong Kong, New York, St. Paul, as well as on various radio programs across the nation.

A 2005 National Endowment for the Arts Literary Fellow, Mathys independently composes and publishes essays and creative writing for literary magazines, journals and anthologies. He was a finalist for the 2004 New York Center for Book Arts Chapbook Competition and a semi-finalist for the 2004 Discovery Poetry Prize, awarded by The Nation magazine.

Prior to receiving his B.A. in international relations from Carleton in 2001, Mathys also worked as a political intern for the United States? Embassy in Berlin. Mathys currently serves as the program coordinator of the American Council on Germany in New York, coordinating various aspects of the Council?s Fellowship Programs for Germans and Americans in journalism, art, environmental and urban affairs.
