Faith Sullivan, author of ?Gardenias,? will give a book reading on Wednesday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. at River City Books, located at 306 Division St. S. in downtown Northfield. A book signing will follow. The event is free and open to the public.
A sequel to the popular ?The Cape Ann,? ?Gardinas? is set in 1942, a month after the United States entered World War II. It depicts the story of Lark, her mother Arlene and her Aunt Betty leaving behind their lives in Harvester, Minn. to head for Los Angeles. The novel takes place in a train station as young soldiers fill the platform, preparing to leave for war. The novel revisits Sullivan?s characters from ?The Cape Ann,? steering them away from their hometown to new adventures.
Having spent much of her life in Minnesota, Sullivan began writing novels in 1975 because of a immense desire to express and develop her ideas for novels. Since then, she has published seven novels, including ?Repent,? ?Watchdog,? ?Mrs. Demming? and ?The Mythical Beast.? She also has published articles, essays, book reviews and humorous pieces.
Sullivan has said about her writing: ?The wonderful thing about it is that you?re never too old or too young. I intend to keep doing it until my pencil runs out of lead.?
Sullivan, a native of small town Minnesota, is a graduate of Mankato State University.
