In 2007, Doctors Without Borders newest medical doctor, James Maskalyk set out for Abyei, Sudan. In his book “Six Months in Sudan: A Young Doctor in a War-Torn Village,” Maskalyk recounts his experiences with other volunteers and the people of Abyei, including the hardships produced by war and enduring poverty. This is a story where hope meets despair, sometimes drowning in it, but it also a story which inspires the possibilities for action.
