Many people today write memoirs, either for their own private rumination or for the reading enjoyment of others. This class, led by a retired drama professor and experienced afficionado of the memoir genre, is intended for the latter category. How can we make our memoirs interesting and readable? What holds our readers’ interest? Essentially, how can we bring our memoirs to life? We address these questions and more by reading, analyzing and critiquing a varied assortment of personal essays at each class to discover the keys to good narrative writing. The discussion format is best suited to students with good grammar and compositional skills who are actively writing.
