Open Call For Submissions:
re:Told
Curated by Sarah Hirneisen & Kija Lucas
Exhibition Dates: July 11-28, 2012
Deadline for submission: Monday, April 30, 2012

Root Division invites artists working in all genres to submit work for an exhibition, catalog, and/or storytelling event called re:Told

re:Told is an artist-curated project focusing upon artworks that look to the past to make sense of the present through visual storytelling. Participants in this three-part project examine identity by re-contextualizing personal, familial, and cultural histories in a contemporary context. By unraveling passed down stories and intertwining personal experience, a new narrative is created.

re:Told will have three components:
A visual art exhibition;
A published catalog that will be launched at the exhibit;
A storytelling event at the close of the exhibition.

Artists, writers, and performers are invited to submit work for inclusion in any or all aspects of the exhibit.

Works considered for re:Told can be presented in any media, and any works that provoke an examination of this concept on the part of viewers of the exhibition will be considered. The focus is on works that have some narrative element, that examine family history or cultural identity, and/or draw elements from the past into a contemporary dialogue.

Curators will be selecting from the pool of applicants to participate in one or more of the project’s components: exhibition, and/or storytelling event, and/or catalog. While no performers or writers have yet to be selected, the call for visual art entries is meant to complement a proposed group of these 12 artists, including the curators’ work:

Natalia Ancisco
Mara Baldwin
Jennifer Brandon
Joey Castor
Mercedes Dorame
Caleb Duarte
Christine Elfman
Dan Farnum
Sarah Hirneisen
Mildred Howard
Kija Lucas

*Final selection of artworks will occur AFTER the submission process is complete, and all artists will be given equal consideration for representation in the final exhibition.
