With two eyes on the canvas and oftentimes, two eyes looking back at him, Austin artist, Ray Donley creates evocative images of the human form that seem to look deep into the very heart and soul of the person viewing the piece. Film and art enthusiasts will have several reasons to keep their eyes on Donley this spring as his documentary, "Dancing the Inquisition Waltz" is released and he makes a very rare special appearance on March 20, 2009 at the Russell Collection Fine Art Gallery in Austin. His work will be on display and will fill the walls of the entire gallery between March 1-28, 2009 and for the very first time, he will unveil a piece of sculpture, that brings his captivating canvases to 3-D form.
Since 1981 Donley has been exhibiting in museums, universities and galleries within the U.S., Europe and Mexico.
With two degrees in art history, Donley has concentrated much of his studies on the Baroque period. He is a representational artist, meaning he draws "real things" as apposed to abstract things, but many of his subjects only exist in his imagination.
"Artists like Donley are a rare find in the industry today and the Russell-Collection is honored to have him as a featured artist in March. The few Donley pieces we have right now continue to draw the most inquisition from our clients - people come into the gallery and are drawn to his paintings in one way or another - I've not seen anything like it in a long time," says Lisa Russell, owner of the Russell Collection.
