Rashanim, seasoned jazz/klezmer rock band, debuts at Joe's Pub with a CD release concert for 'The Gathering' on John Zorn's Tzadik Records. The album features the trio journeying far beyond their electric (and sometimes very loud) setting into a world of much quieter acoustic guitars, banjos, exotic percussion, and ethereal voices. Zorn calls the CD “…a powerful acoustic recording that is perhaps their best to date. …Rashanim joyfully celebrates the Jewish experience with passion, lyricism, and a profound sensitivity.” Featuring Jon Madof (guitar, banjo), Shanir Ezra Blumenkranz (acoustic bass guitar and various other instruments), and Mathias Künzli (percussion, voice).
Also featuring an opening set by Jake Marmer, jazz poet who merges poetry, music, and performance into such philosophically viral mixtures as existentialist dancehall, talmudic jazz poetry, personalized bop apocalypse. He has performed extensively in New York and Jerusalem, with his band Frantic Turtle, Mima'amakim collective, and various hip downtown characters.
