Rap returns…again! Due to extraordinary popular demand, Honolulu Theatre for Youth will present a remount of Rap’s Hawaii, featuring the work of legendary writer and performer Rap Reiplinger, in June. Directed by Harry S. Wong III, actors Kimo Kaona, Pomai Lopez and Charles Timtim—the same talent who starred in the premiere in March—will once again bring Hawaii’s most beloved comic material to life on stage.
Rap’s Hawaii plays Saturdays, June 14, 21 and 28 at 4 and 8 p.m. at Tenney Theatre, St. Andrew’s Cathedral. Tickets are $10 for children and $20 for adults; college students with ID and seniors age 60 and over are admitted for $10; active duty military receive one free child admission with the purchase of each regularly priced adult ticket. Order tickets online at htyweb.org or call the HTY box office at 457-4254.
Presented in two acts as a series of sketches, HTY’s production is structured like a vaudeville show or, in Harry Wong’s words, “a local ‘Saturday Night Live.’” The common thread is Rap’s unique observations on local life, which manage to poke fun with an affection that unifies all of Hawaii’s cultures. They are as relevant today as they were in the 1970s. Skits include:
