JOHN HOLT
Born in Kingston in 1945, John began performing at the age of 12 via talent contests. He recorded his first single in 1963 with "I Cried a Tear" for producer Leslie Kong, and also recorded duets with the late Alton Ellis. Prominence came for John when he took the stage as lead singer for The Paragons, and their recording of notable songs "Ali Baba", "Tonight", "I See Your Face", and the international hit single, "Tide Is High", which was made famous by Blondie.
Holt left the Paragons in 1970 and concentrated on his solo career full-time. By the early 1970s, he was one of the biggest stars of reggae, and his "Stick By Me" was the biggest-selling Jamaican record of 1972, one of a number of records recorded with producer Bunny Lee. His 1973 album, Time Is The Master, was hugely successful, with orchestral arrangements recorded in London. The success of the strings-laden reggae arrangement led to Trojan Records issuing a series of similarly produced albums by Bunny Lee starting with the 1,000 Volts of Holt in 1973, a compilation of Holt's reggae cover versions of popular hits such as "Help Me Make It Through The Night" (written by actor Kris Kristofferson,) Billy Joel's "Just The Way You Are" and Diana Ross's "Touch Me In The Morning" amongst others.
CLIVE CHIN
CLIVE CHIN has worked with the likes of The Wailers, Alton Ellis, Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, Lee Perry and Black Uhuru, among others. He began working at Randy's Record Store, his father's business, and began helping make the associated studio, Randy's Studio 17, one of the most important Jamaican studios of the early 1970s. Chin's first major commercial success was Java, an international hit by Augustus Pablo. He had further local hits with Dennis Brown's "Cheater", and Junior Byles' "King of Babylon", and produced Pablo's debut album, This Is Augustus Pablo. Chin produced the Java Java Dub album in 1973, which he claims was the first ever dub album. Further local hits followed with Carl Malcolm's "Miss Wire Waist" and "Fattie Bum Bum", which, with the help of Jonathan King, became a UK chart hit in 1975, reaching #8. After his family business moved to New York City, Chin spent some fifteen years running a Jamaican restaurant in Queens. He began producing again in 1998. In 2007 VP Records started an imprint 17 North Parade to reissue some of the historic Randy's releases.
