The concert features three twentieth-century works by Americans, beginning with Alan Hovhanhess’s Divertimento for winds (1947). Then, Joan Tower’s Amazon I (1977) explores the majesty of the Amazon river, from stillness to turbulence over its 4000 miles. For the second half, Radius Ensemble’s flutist Sarah Brady performs recent Pulitzer Prize-winner Jennifer Higdon’s rapidfire for solo flute (1992), a powerful portrayal of inner-city violence. Finally, we travel back in time to 1875 for Antonin Dvořák’s String Quintet No. 2 in G major, Op. 77. This performance will include the extracted and rarely heard Intermezzo, which became the Nocturne in B major.
